Our Team

  • Les Thibedeau

Our founder and CEO has been a pillar of the community within the Cowichan Valley for decades. Les is an expert in the field of child welfare and has dedicated his career to providing the highest standard of care and support to vulnerable youth and their families.

  • Denise Richman

Denise Richman has worked in the field of child and youth care services nearly 40 years. Her passion for supporting high-risk youth began at age 20, when she worked as a practicum student while attending Mount Royal in Calgary, Alberta. She was part of the first neighbourhood residential centre for youth in Alberta—Spruce Cliff—which provided her with direct experience in effective leadership and demonstrated how strong teamwork benefits both staff and the youth they serve.

After managing a YDC group home in Edmonton, Denise transferred from the University of Alberta to Simon Fraser University in British Columbia. Following her graduation, she worked for the Maples Adolescent Treatment Centre. In 2005, she relocated to Vancouver Island, eager to expand her knowledge in the area of addiction while working at Cedars Treatment Centre. This experience offered valuable insight into addictions recovery.

In 2013, Denise joined CMCYS, where she was hired to manage and support a high-risk youth in a standalone program. Over time, that program evolved into two initiatives—the CMCYS Semi-Independent Program and the 1:1 Program.

Denise considers it an honour to be part of the company and takes great pride in the work her team does for youth. She describes the team as cohesive and dedicated, serving as a strong example of what teamwork can achieve for young people and their community.

  • Candice Margetts

Born and raised in the Cowichan Valley, Candice's roots in the community run deep.  With nearly 30 years of experience in the medical field, including 23 years as a nurse, she brings compassion, expertise, and heart to her role as Coordinator of the 5-Bed Licensed Program. Guided by a passion for supporting vulnerable and underprivileged populations, Candice approaches her work through a trauma-informed lens, always striving to create safety, trust, and connection.

Candice is trusted and respected within the local street community for her empathy, understanding, and commitment to meaningful connection. Her background in mental health and addictions informs her holistic, relationship-centered approach to care. She values collaboration and community partnerships that strengthen support for those most in need. Outside of work, Candice enjoys spending time in nature and continues to learn about Indigenous culture and teachings with deep respect and humility as an active ally and lifelong learner.
